Angelina Jolie made a surprise visit to Afghanistan this week to meet refugees in the war-torn country. The Hollywood actress, who is a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, skipped the Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday night and instead flew to the city of Kabul on Monday. Jolie, who last visited the nation back in 2008, spent two days there, meeting with children at the girls’ school she has helped fund, as well as displaced locals who have returned to the country since the 2002 ousting of the Taliban by a U.S.-led invasion.
At the end of her visit, the Oscar-winner released a statement calling for help for the millions of refugees who are struggling to survive in Afghanistan. She says, “The focus needs to be put now on reintegration and that means not just putting up shelter but making sure there is water, job opportunities, a school for the children and medical clinics.”
