ISLAMABAD – A six-member bench of the Supreme Court ordered the government on Tuesday to remove Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General Waseem Ahmed from his post and submit a report to the Registrar Office within three days.
The SC bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said the FIA’s report on mismanagement and alleged corruption in Hajj affairs was dissatisfactory and it seemed as if it were being delayed deliberately to protect the accused. The court said the government was determined to get in the way of its orders.
The chief justice appreciated the voluntary appearance of Abdul Qadir Gilani – son of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani – before the FIA to give his statement. Counsel for the government Abdul Hafeez Pirzada told the court that a committee had already been formed to look into the contractual appointments on which the court had objected.
The court made it clear once again that appointments on contractual basis had to be discontinued under Section 14 of the Civil Servants Act of 1973 unless conditions specified therein were satisfied.
It seemed the government was not interested in obeying the order of the court because so far the contract appointments of only 9 officers had been terminated, whereas there was a list of more than 100 employees serving under contracts in various capacities, the court said.
