OGRA’s new pricing formula – CNG price slashed for Karachi, parts of Punjab

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI – The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) on Monday notified new tariff for compressed natural gas (CNG) dividing the country in four regions and fixing the sale price of gas on the Gas Calorific Value (GCV) with effect from March 1. According to a notification, the authority has determined and notified the maximum sale price to be charged by a licensee CNG station from the consumers and slashed the price by Rs 1.88 per kilogramme for Karachi, Hyderabad and some parts of Punjab while it has been increased for the rest of the country.
The reduction in retail price will apply to around 2600 CNG stations while the hiked tariff is going to affect around 500 outlets across the country, the Pakistan Today learnt. It is important to mention that the Economic Coordination Committee of the federal cabinet had directed pricing of the CNG on the GVC basis instead of uniform prices throughout the country.
The consumers tariff applicable for Karachi, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Larkana and Naudero in Sindh and Bahawalpur, Multan, Sahiwal, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Jhang, Chiniot, Sargodha, Mandi Bahauddin, Mianwali, DG Khan and Layyah in Punjab would be Rs 53.45 per kilogramme.
The new tariff applicable to the consumers in Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Sukkur, Rohri, Pano Aqil, Khairpur, Kot Digi, Ranipur, Moro, Nawab Shah, Sakrand, Shahdadpur, Hala, Sanghar, Tando Adam, Khanpur, Mityari, Kotri and Thatta in Sindh along with Memon Goth and Pakistan Steel in Karachi and Quetta city, Mach, Dera Murad Jamali and Sibbi in Balochistan is Rs 55.22 per kg.
The tariff fixed for some areas of interior Sindh including Tando Jam, Badin and Golarchi, and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, excluding Bannu, Karak, Tank, Dera Ismail Khan and Lakki Marwat is Rs 57 per kg.
The consumers in the Potohar region and Bhakkar in Punjab and Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Tank in KP will by the fuel at price of Rs 58.78 per kg.
The spokesman of All Pakistan CNG Association (APCNGA), Ghiyas Abdullah Paracha while talking to the Pakistan Today termed the creation of four zones a right move and said it would help providing better quality gas to the consumers.
He said the new CNG prices had been notified under the latest formula, adding that the slash in electricity tariff also played a role in lowering the CNG prices.
