510 get degrees at Szabist’s Convocation 2011


KARACHI – The Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (Szabist) conferred degrees on 510 students at its Convocation 2011 held at the PAF Museum on Saturday. Ten students, who excelled in various disciplines, were awarded gold medals.
Corporate gold medals were also conferred on the occasion. In her speech, the university’s Chancellor Dr Azra Fazal said that Szabist upholds the legacy of Benazir Bhutto, who was its founding chancellor. She said that Szabist’s mission is to work for the betterment of the country and its people and to contribute towards earning a prominent place for Pakistan in the comity of nations.
She pointed out that Szabist was established with the objective to produce highly qualified personnel to help meet the country’s requirements, adding that the university has become an institute of excellence.
“Science and technology holds the key to economic growth and social development,” she said, adding that it is necessary to prepare a population that is not only knowledgeable and skilled but it is also aware of its responsibilities and is also willing to contribute to the growth of the nation as well as the well-being of the society. Dr Fazal said that Szabist is devoting a substantial percentage of its funds towards research and development. Charter Inspection and Evaluation Committee Chairman Dr SM Qureshi delivered the keynote address on the occasion.
A large number of guests and parents of the degree-receiving students attended the convocation.
SZABIST is a fully chartered institute established through a Legislative Act of the Pakistan Assembly (Sindh Act No. XI of 1995) and is approved and recognised by the Higher Education Commission as a degree granting institution.
It has campuses in Karachi, Islamabad, Larkana and Dubai. It is a registered member of the International Association of Universities, Paris; Association of Commonwealth Universities, London; Federation of the Universities of Islamic World Rabat; Asia University Federation, Seoul and the Association of SAARC Universities.
