KARACHI – Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET) Chancellor ZA Nizami has said that it is the supreme art of a teacher to awaken excitement in creative expression and knowledge, and “I think this is the most extraordinary collection of a talent and human knowledge that has ever been gathered at out university.”
ZA Nizami said this while addressing participants of All Karachi Bilingual Declamation Contest for Qamaruz Zaman (Alig) Memorial Trophy 2011. The contest was organised by the SSUET, and by 24 students from 12 colleges and universities participated. For English debate, Saba Fatima of the Dow Medical College was given the first prize, Abdullah Jamal of the University of Karachi second, and Ayesha Nayab of the Bahria University third.
For Urdu debate, Sub-Lieutenant Adnan of the Pakistan Navy Engineering College was given the first prize, Ammar Yasir of the Baqai Medical College second, and Amina Akber of the Sindh Medical College (SMC) third. Consolation prizes for English and Urdu debate were given to Zaria Tariq of the SMC and Vizma Bazai of Jinnah University for Women respectively. KU received the Qamaruz Zaman Memorial Team Trophy.
Speaking on the occasion, Nizami said that the purpose of holding declamation contests is advancement of knowledge and polishing of creative abilities of the students. He emphasised that such healthy activities should continue to uncover intelligence and unleash the students’ speaking skills. Although the Sir Syed University is an institution of engineering, it also gives due importance to extracurricular activities.
SSUET Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Saiyid Nazir Ahmed said that the Sir Syed University is very much focused on personality grooming of the students according to their talent because healthy extracurricular activities and sports are as necessary as academic engagements.
