British FCO decides to localise junior posts

LONDON – The British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has decided to localise the junior posts of its staff working all over the world.
Under the proposed plan, more than 400 junior clerical posts would be filled by employing local people overseas to work in the UK embassies and high commissions in more than 170 countries of the world.
An FCO official told Pakistan Today that it was the part of government’s overall strategy to cut major spending as more than 300 million pounds would be saved each year after the implementation of this policy.
He said these savings would help the foreign office contribute to the government’s priority to reduce deficit.
He added the officials wanted the British foreign office focus properly on its main priorities: prosperity, security and helping British national abroad.
There are 15,000 workers in the British foreign office to promote Britain’s interests around the world and run a global network of embassies, high commissions and consulates.
Similarly FCO’s responsibility includes supporting the British economy, helping over two million British nationals abroad every year and funding the BBC World Service, British Council, Wilton Park conference centre and scholarship programmes.
