ISLAMABAD – President Asif Zardari on Thursday denied Husain Haqqani’s request to be relieved of ambassadorial responsibilities and asked him to continue as Pakistan’s envoy to the US. A source told Pakistan Today that Haqqani had told Zardari that he wanted to quit as the country’s ambassador to the US and wanted to resume his career as an academician.
Haqqani also told the president that he wanted time to write a book. The source said the president did not want to change the ambassador at “this critical time”, particularly ahead of his expected visit to the US in a couple of months.
Before his appointment as ambassador to the United States in April 2008, Haqqani, also a former director of the Center for International Relations, was a professor at Boston University.
