ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Foreign Ministry on Thursday welcomed the United States (US) Senate report on “Avoiding water wars in South and Central Asia”, which acknowledged that the dams, India was building in Occupied Kashmir, would limit the water supply to Pakistan.
Foreign Office Spokesperson Tehmina Janjua said, “The report substantiates Pakistan’s concerns at the building of dams by India on the western rivers in violation of the Indus Waters Treaty.” The report released by US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Senator John Kerry stated that no single dam along the waters, controlled by the Indus Waters Treaty, would affect Pakistan’s access to water, but the cumulative effect of these projects could give India the ability to store enough water to limit the supply to Pakistan at crucial moments in the growing season.
Tehmina said Pakistan had conveyed its concerns to India on various projects being built by India and added that these concerns were required to be addressed in a sincere and result-oriented manner.
