KARACHI – The Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) announced on Wednesday that it would move the Supreme Court of Pakistan against a parliamentary committee’s decision whereby the proposal for extension of two Sindh High Court (SHC) judges was rejected.
The SHCBA took the decision at a meeting chaired by SHCBA President Anwar Mansoor Khan and attended by SHCBA office-bearers and senior lawyers. The participants of the meeting condemned the parliamentary committee’s decision to reject extending services of two SHC additional judges, Justices Tasneem Aslam and Salman Hamid.
“The committee’s decision is unconstitutional and illegal, as no reason was given for rejecting the proposal,” said the participants, adding that the apex court would be approached and the unlawful step challenged. SHCBA’s office-bearers have empowered the SHCBA president and secretary-general to take the needed steps for dealing with the issue in the apex court; however, they have yet to assign a counsel for representing the SHCBA in the court.
The proposal forwarded by the Judicial Commission was rejected a day earlier by the parliamentary committee at a meeting in Islamabad. However, four other judges – Justices Imam Bux Baloch, Azhar Rizvi, Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Nisar Ahmed Sheikh – have been granted an extension of one year.
