Fawad talks on health sector reforms

LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken steps for the development and welfare of the doctors, nurses and other officials working in health sector and on his directions the Health Department has regularised about 5,000 doctors besides, promoting hundreds of medical officers, said Health Secretary Fawad Hassan Fawad on Thursday.
He was chairing a meeting to review measures taken for the health sector development and doctors’ welfare. He said 1,135 medical officers of grade 17 had been promoted in grade 18, 305 senior doctors had been promoted in grade 19, 106 Senior women medical officers were promoted in grade 19 and 43 associate professors were promoted as professors in the last two years. Moreover, 22 professors have been appointed through the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) and six on contractual basis. Fawad informed that 131 WMOs/MOs were appointed on ad-hoc basis.
He further said that 64 doctors were promoted as associate professors and 18 associate professors were appointed on contractual basis. Similarly, 171 assistant professors were regularised on their jobs, whereas 48 were appointed on contractual basis. He informed that 515 senior registrars working on contractual basis in different hospitals have been regularised whereas, 76 have been appointed on contractual basis and 40 on ad-hoc basis.
The secretary further said that on the instruction of the chief minister, 3,857 nurses have been regularised and 100 further were promoted in grade 17, while 2,000 nurses were appointed in different hospitals in the province. Similarly, 325 dental surgeons, 29 drug inspectors/pharmacists, 22 physiotherapists, 28 assistant physiotherapists, 11 medical technologist, 13 budget and accounts officers, three bio-chemists, 19 clinical psychiatrists and one micro-technologist and therapist were regularised on their jobs.
Fawad said the government was spending funds for providing latest medical treatment facilities to the masses free-of-cost and measures have also been taken for the promotion of medical education. He further said that mobile health units which were provided to the flood affected district were providing treatment facilities at the door steps in far-flung areas.
Three to four hundred patients were being treated daily on each MHU. He further told that chief minister had already given approval of procurement of 50 MHUs. Fawad further said that government was utilizing all its resources to ensure best healthcare to the people of Punjab. He said that special strategy has been adopted to monitor the routine immunization programme and polio campaign for getting 100 percent results of these campaigns.
