NA body throws out languages bill

ISLAMABAD – The National Assembly Standing Committee on Law, Justice and
Parliamentary Affairs has rejected a bill seeking status of national languages for Balochi, Punjabi, Pashto, Shina, Sindhi, Seraiki and Urdu.
The committee in its report, laid before the Lower House of the Parliament on Tuesday, also rejected the suggestion that English should be the official language of the country until arrangements were made for its replacement with Urdu within fifteen years after the proposed legislation came into effect.
The committee during a meeting on January 17 did not approve the bill, moved by PML-Q MNA Marvi Memon, unanimously after a detailed consideration and recommended that it should not be processed with by the National Assembly for legislation.
