ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday announced that it would initiate a legal action against the parliamentarians having dual nationality. After holding consultations with political parties, ECP Secretary Ishtiak Ahmed Khan told a press conference that under Article 63 of the constitution, dual nationality holders could not become members of the Parliament.
“Currently, the ECP have no record of the MPs with dual nationality; however, we are working in collaboration with the departments concerned to point them out for necessary action,” he added. He said after consulting all political parties, the ECP had decided to allot election symbols to the parties on permanent basis.
To a query, he said the process of compiling electoral rolls would be completed by the end of current year. Meanwhile, a source in the ECP, who attended the meeting, told ‘Pakistan Today’ that an intense debate took place between the leaders of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) for the symbol of ‘balance.’
