KARACHI – The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday granted protective pre-arrest bail to Moonis Elahi, son of former Punjab chief minister Pervaiz Elahi, against a surety of Rs 0.7 million in the National Insurance Corporation Limited (NICL) scam case.
A division bench of Justice Ghulam Sarwar Korai and Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar granted the plea for three weeks. The applicant approached the SHC to seek protective pre-arrest bail to avoid being arrested in Sindh after a red warrant was issued for him in the NICL scam. Arguing on behalf of the applicant, Akhtar Hussain said his client was being politically victimised by a rival political party, which was trying to implicate him in fake cases and he should, therefore, be granted protective bail.
The lawyer contended that Moonis’ name was placed on the Exit Control List by the Federal Investigation Agency on an order of the apex court. “Moonis is in Dubai for his business engagements and wants to face allegations before a trial court,” he said.
According to the prosecution, FIA Lahore had registered two cases in connection with the scam and arrested 12 people, including former NICL chairman Ayaz Khan Niazi and former minister Habibullah Warraich, under sections 409, 420, 468, 471, 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 5 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.
