KARACHI – Interior Minister Rehman Malik has warned against money laundering, saying the government would take all possible measures to check the menace. The interior minister stated this while inaugurating a crisis management cell at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here on Saturday.
“The government would take all measures to curb money laundering or what it is locally called ‘Hawala’ in the country,” he assured businessmen. The minister said that usage of formal channels like banks for money transfer could help the funds-starved Pakistan earn billions of rupees on monthly basis.
The interior minister said his government had thoroughly studied the merits and demerits of ‘Hawala’ and the modus operandi of those involved in the unlawful business. He said the government was giving a chance to money launderers who should now legalise and run their business through proper channel.
The interior minister warned that, if detected, all money remitted through “Hawala” would be confiscated and deposited in the national kitty without any discrimination.
