ISLAMABAD – No serious effort was made on the part of federal government to restore suspended educational activities in over 370 institutes of Islamabad, as teachers continued boycott of classes for a second consecutive day on Friday. The protesting teachers, affiliated with the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE), have been boycotted classes since Thursday against the non-implementation of the teachers’ package announced by the prime minister on November 8 last year.
They vowed to take their protest to the roads from Monday if the pledge made by the PM regarding the increase in their salaries was not implemented. During the school hours, the teachers wore black ribbons on their arms and staged sit-ins outside their respective classrooms. The strike, however, remained peaceful. Some school students took to the streets and chanted slogans against the government over the non-implementation of the teachers’ demands.
Talking to Pakistan Today, Azhar Awan, president Federal Government Teacher Association (FGTA), said more than 7,000 teachers would stage protests on roads from Monday. He said that no effort was being made on the part of the government to restore suspended educational activities in 378 educational institutes of the federal capital.
Awan said high-ups of the FDE and the Ministry of Education were befooling the teachers for the last three months by not implementing the package, but now, “we have deiced that we will only call off their strike when we get copy of the notification.”
