GUJRANWALA – A killer who was awarded capital punishment and black warrants was released after reconciliation with the victim’s party. Reportedly, Shabbir Ahmad shot dead his rival group’s man on August 10, 1990, at village Hadhonoye in the precincts of Sadar Police Station.
Later, a district and sessions judge sentenced him to death and Lahore High Court and Supreme Court upheld the decision. After the rejection of his mercy petition by the president, black warrants for Shabbir Ahmad were issued, but could not be implemented at the eleventh hour.
Last week, the family of Shabbir Ahmad succeeded in reconciling with the victim’s heirs, following which they recorded their statement regarding their decision to pardon the convict before Additional District and Sessions Judge Anwar Ahmad Qureshi. The judge ordered the release of Shabbir Ahmed from the death cell of Gujranwala Central Jail.
OPERATION AGAINST KITE FLYERS: The city police started a crackdown against kite flyers to stop preparations for Basant in the city and destroyed 25,000 kites and 4,000 packets of chemical twine along with firecrackers worth Rs 250,000. Reportedly, Satellite Town police raided a number of places, seized kites, twine and other relevant items and warned the violators of law of strict action.
The civil lines police also arrested five outlaws, seized five pistols, 600 gram charas and two bottles of liquor from them.
