ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the attorney general to talk to the government to provide complete protection to the FIA additional director general, who is leading the probe into the NICL scam and facing life threats. A four-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday, was hearing a suo motu case against violation of Public Procurement Rules, 2004, causing billions of rupees losses to the public exchequer by the National Insurance Company Ltd (NICL).
Appearing on notice, Qureshi informed the court that his life was under threat and he might be killed. He said he was facing indirect threats from Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, Pervez Elahi, Moonis Elahi and Mohsin Warraich. The chief justice then directed the attorney general to talk to the government to direct the Interior Ministry to provide Qureshi complete protection. He said the court wanted to bring back the looted money to the national exchequer, adding that the foreign exchange was flying out of the country without control.
Qureshi informed the court that so far, FIA had recovered over Rs 1.63 billion and deposited it in NICL accounts. He said FIA had received a certificate from England, attested by Consulate Attache Muhammad Irshad at the Pakistani embassy UK, that Moonis was not involved in the scam. He said FIA had detected two fake bank accounts from where Moonis was paid Rs 220 million and Rs 100 million.
