ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has convened a meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on February 19 at the Supreme Court Building. The JCP will consider the appointment of two ad-hoc judges in the Supreme Court and confirmation of nine additional judges of the Sindh High Court.
While chairing a full court meeting on February 14, the CJP had proposed that in order to clear the backlog, Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday, who is retiring on February 17 and Justice Rahmat Hussain Jafferi may be requested to rejoin the bench as ad-hoc judges under Article 182 of the constitution to work for a period of one and two years respectively.
The full court meeting had unanimously agreed to the proposal. According to Article 182, if at any time it is not possible for want of quorum of judges of the Supreme Court to hold or to continue any sitting of the court, or for any other reason it is necessary to increase temporarily the number of judges of the Supreme Court, the CJP in consultation with the JCP as provided in clause (2) of Article 175A with the approval of the president, may request any person who has held the office of a judge of that court to attend sittings as an ad-hoc judge for such period as may be necessary.
