KARACHI – Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza on Tuesday directed the Traffic Police Department to ensure smooth traffic flow in the metropolis. The directive was issued to the Karachi DIG Traffic after frequent news reports of traffic jams in the city during the past 10 days.
A Home Department spokesman stated that the minister had asked the DIG to raise the issue seriously with the Traffic Engineering Department and other officials related while preparing a working paper to resolve the issue of growing traffic menace. The traffic jams also affect emergency ambulance services and delay the patients from reaching hospitals, he observed.
Mirza directed the DIG to order his department’s officials to check high speed driving, overloading and various other traffic violations by the transporters, which also resulted in traffic jams. The movement of heavy vehicles during rush hours to be checked as these should be driven upcountry during the designated hours, he directed.
Moreover, the home minister stated that a traffic rule awareness campaign must be launched without causing any inconvenience to the general public and particularly the motorcyclists should be guided to avoid riding without helmets.
