ISLAMABAD – Despite the passage of over three months, a sub-committee of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Education has failed to submit its report to the committee on irregularities in the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) during recruitment of teachers.
The said sub-committee was constituted under Dr Nadeem Ehsan to look into various irregularities made by the FDE in recruitment of the teaching staff in MTT and TUGT cadre and other matter. However, the sub-committee failed to come up with any finding in the meeting that was held on Monday under the chairmanship of Abid Sher Ali. Sher Ali took serious notice of the failure of the sub-committee and decided that NA committee would now look into the matter itself.
The committee sought a detailed report from the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) over an alleged bogus housing scheme launched by the board. The NA body passed Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) bill, 2010, that envisages an autonomous status for PAL. The committee discussed prohibition of corporal punishment bill, 2010, moved by Dr Attiya Inayatullah.
It was noted that the law was not applicable to religious educational institutions, as they were not under the control of the Education Ministry. The committee was informed that madrassas were regulated by the Interior Ministry. The mover of bill said this bill would only deal with educational institutions. “After giving the bill final touches, we will discuss it in the next meeting,” Abid Sher Ali said.
During the discussion of compulsory school attendance bill, 2008, the NA body was informed by the Law Ministry that the bill was already applicable in all provinces.
The committee directed the deputy law draftsman to give a written answer in this regard in the next two days. The meeting was attended by Dr Attiya Inayatullah, MNA Shamshad Sattar Bachani, MNA Mamoona Hashmi, Tasneem Siddiqui, officials of the Education Ministry and the PAL director general.
