LAHORE/ISLAMABAD – Noted singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was arrested at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi on Sunday by India’s revenue intelligence officials after he and two of his troupe members were caught for allegedly carrying $100,000 in undeclared foreign currency, private NDTV has reported.
According to the channel, Rahat, and his entire troupe, had been arrested by India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials, the channel said. They will be produced in court today (Monday). The officials said the foreign currency was not declared to Customs officials after the immigration checks, adding that the troupe was on in its way to Lahore via Dubai by an Emirates flight.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Rehman Malik phoned Shahid Malik, Pakistan’s high commissioner in New Delhi, and inquired about the incident. Malik also directed the high commissioner to provide all kind of assistance to the playback singer. Khan’s wife, Nida Rahat said she had contacted an acquaintance in New Delhi who had confirmed that Khan was safe.
