Triangle approach to make varsities weapon-free

KARACHI – Sindh government Media Coordinator Taj Haider has said that a triangle approach of government, political parties and the management of universities would be applied so that universities and educational institutions are made weapon-free. “This will ensure smooth and quality education in a safe, secure and peaceful atmosphere,” he said at the residence of Awami Tehreek President Ayaz Latif Palejo in Hyderabad.
“Education is the stairway to development and prosperity for any nation, but due to the policies implemented by previous regimes, the standard of education has dropped and there is lack of security for students,” he said. He said that the PPP and the Awami Tehreek have agreed to convene an educational conference in which the Sindh government, political parties and the management of universities would participate.
The conference would discuss and decide a code of ethics for universities and other educational institutions and plan a strategy to rid them of weapons. “There is a need to make policies so that the universities can have a safe, secure and competitive academic atmosphere for the better future of students,” he said. Haider said that he has arrived at the residence of the Awami Tehreek president to discuss and share issues that can be addressed jointly with other progressive and democratic political parties.
He said that the Sindh government is committed towards permanent rehabilitation of flood survivors and a separate ministry for rehabilitation has been constituted for this purpose. He said that various housing schemes were in the pipeline to provide shelter to the homeless flood survivors while proposals for providing them plots in big cities was also under consideration for which feasibility issues were being examined.
On the occasion, Palejo expressed his concern over the violence that recently
erupted in the Sindh University, resulting in the murder of a student. “Such lawlessness would ruin educational institutions and deprive the youth of Sindh from their right of education if preventive steps are not taken,” he said.
He informed Haider about the law and order situation in the province and sought strict action against the elements creating a security threat for minorities and other communities. He assured Haider that his party would support the PPP in resolving such issues.
