KARACHI – The Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) Gulshan-e-Iqbal was forced to suspend its evening shift classes after a violent clash between two student organisations outside its building on Saturday. Members of the Pakhtun Students Federation (PkSF) allegedly attacked a student belonging to the Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) when the latter was leaving a mosque.
After this incident, members of the IJT tried to settle the score with the rival student group. The clash intensified when both groups resorted to attacking each other with rods, sticks and stones. Two students were injured in the brawl and taken to a nearby hospital. Rangers rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. They baton-charged the fighting students and dispersed them.
There were also reports that PkSF students forcibly stopped educational activities at the university and forced students taking classes to leave the campus. They also besieged the administration block at the campus. The clash created a massive traffic gridlock at the NIPA Flyover and vehicular movement came to a halt for at least half and hour.
The university administration announced later that it is suspending evening classes at the Gulshan-e-Iqbal campus until normalcy is restored there. A few days ago, the two student groups had clashed at the Gulshan College as well in which IJT students ended up having the upper hand.
