Opposition wary of Zardari’s agenda

ISLAMABAD – The opposition parties are overwhelmingly convinced that the roundtable conference proposed by President Asif Ali Zardari is an attempt to get their approval on a possible unpopular decision vis-a-vis Raymond Davis to avoid the argument that the government was isolated on the issue against the entire nation.
“There is a dominant impression in our party that the government would release Davis immediately after the roundtable conference by giving a justification to the masses that the majority of participants agreed on the move,” Jamaat-e-Islami leader Liqat Baloch said.
“If the government thinks that it will release Davis under the cover of the roundtable conference by giving an impression that it was a unanimous decision of the national leadership, the government is mistaken,” Baloch added. He said his party would not participate in the moot if the Raymond Davis issue was included in the agenda.
The discussions with the JUI-F, PML-N and PML-Q leaders also revealed that they would also not take part in the moot in case the Raymond Davis issue was part of the agenda. They argue that Raymond Davis case should be decided by courts of law and not by the political leadership. Senator Talha Mehmood of the JUI-F said the convention of the roundtable conference was an attempt by the government to put responsibility of Davis’ release on all political parties.
