KARACHI – The Sindh government is likely to have municipal and metropolitan corporations-like institutions in order to create a balance of power between nazims and the provincial authorities. The MQM, a coalition partner of the Pakistan People’s Party-led Sindh government, has agreed with this proposal, which was presented by the ruling party in a recent meeting, sources told Pakistan Today.
Under the local government system introduced by the PML-Q government in 2002, there were confusions when it came to power sharing between provincial government and the local government bodies. However in the new local government set up, the powers granted to nazims that end up creating issues with the provincial authorities would be abolished and municipal and metropolitan corporations-like institutions would be set up in accordance with the Constitution of 1973, the sources added.
