President approves appointment of two SC judges, SHC CJ

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday approved the appointment of Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Justice Amir Hani Muslim as permanent judges of the Supreme Court and Justice Mushir Alam as the Sindh High Court chief justice.
According to a senior SC official, both SC judges would be administered an oath next week, most probably on Tuesday.
With the inclusion of these judges, the number of the SC judges would rise to 18, excluding the chief justice, but including the two ad hoc judges – Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday – against the sanctioned strength of 17 permanent judges including the chief justice. Justice Ramday’s one year tenure as an ad hoc judge will expire on February 17.
Currently 16 judges, including two ad hoc judges are working in the SC. After the inclusion of the two judges, the sanctioned strength of the apex court (16+1) has been achieved.
However, an incumbent SC judge, Justice Zahid Hussain, is facing contempt proceedings for taking oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order
Earlier on January 22, the Judicial Commission (JC) for the appointment of judges had unanimously approved the names of Chief Justice Osmany and Justice Muslim of the SHC for elevation to the Supreme Court.
