LAHORE – The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) on Thursday appreciated the PM’s move for approving the summary of not amending the blasphemy law and announced calling of its Namoos-e-Risalat Movement. In a joint declaration, SIC leaders Fazal Karim, Riaz Shah, Ijaz Qadri, Afzal Qadri, Mahfouz Mashadi, Nawaz Kharal and Ajmal Gilani said that they would celebrate today (Friday) as “thanksgiving day”.
The Namoos-e-Risalat Movement started after slain Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer visited the Sheikhupura Jail and met blasphemy convict Aasia Bibi on November 21, 2010. Religious parties, feeling that the federal government has started a process to amend blasphemy laws, started holding protests.
“We are ending our movement but will remain vigilant, if the federal government tries to follow the old path, we will again start the movement without wasting even a single moment.” Sunni leaders said.
