Two ‘bandits’ killed in Orangi Town – mob justice or police action?

KARACHI – Two alleged bandits were killed and another injured in Mianwali Colony, Orangi Town on Thursday, as witnesses claimed that an enraged mob killed the two men, contradicting the police’s version that they were killed in an encounter. Witnesses said that three men tried to loot a shop in the area, however, the locals gathered at the spot.
The three alleged bandits tried to escape from the spot by firing at the crowd, but some unidentified person from the mob opened fire at them. The three men were fatally wounded and later brutally beaten up by the angry mob. Two of them died at the spot and the third was rescued by the police and taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, the witnesses said.
However, Orangi TPO Khurram Waris claimed that the two men were killed in an encounter with the police and Rangers. He said that the locals helped the police apprehend the bandits, but denied that anyone from the public shot them or beat them up. He said that two of the bandits succumbed to their injuries at the hospital and the third one’s condition is serious.
The police official said that the injured bandit has been identified as Haroon and one of the dead as Imran Hussain, a resident of Mehmoodabad. He said the police have also recovered cash, cell phones and weapons from the possession of the three men.
