ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday issued notices to the Attorney General of Pakistan, Advocate General Balochistan and others to file para-wise comments on a petition filed against the incidents of targeted killing, kidnapping and abduction for ransom in Balochistan.
A four-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday was hearing the petition filed by the president Balochistan High Court Bar Association (BHCBA) under Article 184 (3) of the Constitution, making the federal government through Interior Ministry and nine others as respondents.
Before adjourning further hearing till February 25, the court directed the government to ensure protection to the life and property of all the citizens throughout the province and submit a comprehensive report as to what measures they had taken to overcome the prevailing law and order situation. The petitioner stated that the law enforcing agencies (LEAs) had failed to protect the life and property of the citizens including lawyers, government officials and LEAs personnel.
The petitioner contended that not a single person being a law abiding citizen considered himself safe, adding that the media was reporting the various incidents but the authorities concerned had failed to discharge their functions despite being bound to do so in terms of Article 9, 14 and 24 of the Constitution.
