KARACHI – One of the four convicts managed to escape from the courtroom when the Malir District and Sessions Court on Wednesday sentenced the group to imprisonment in two robbery cases. The accused man named Saleem Burney was on bail and had turned up before the court for the hearing.
He was sentenced to four years imprisonment. However, as the judge was about to announce the verdict, he managed to escape from the court premises. Burney, along with his accomplices, Mohammad Shafiq, Karam Ali and Naeem alias TT was charged for robbing a house owned by Abdullah Bhatti in the Ibrahim Hyderi area in March 2010.
The latter three were also charged with breaking into the house of Sajid Hussain in April 2010 in the same vicinity and robbing the house occupants of cash, jewellery and other valuables. They were sentenced to eight-year imprisonment for the two robberies.
District and Sessions Judge (Malir) Syed Kausar Ali Bukhari also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 on each of the convicts and in case of default, they would undergo additional three months (for each offence) imprisonment.
The court also issued non-bailable warrant for the arrest of Burney and directed the police to arrest the accused and shift him to prison to undergo the sentence. The notice was also issued to the surety. The court extended the benefit of Section 382-B CrPC to the remaining accused and sent them back to jail along with conviction warrants to serve out the awarded sentences.
The three accused were detained on April 9 from the Zaman Town area after an encounter with police. Two cases (109/10 and 153/10) were registered under sections 395 (punishment for robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code. A few months later, the police also apprehended Burney, but he was released on bail.
