New cabinet to decide two weekly holidays

ISLAMABAD – The federal government is seriously considering the option of resuming two holidays a week from April for reducing energy consumption and administrative expenditure as electricity shortfall would reach 2,000 to 3,000MW in the coming summer.
The proposal is part of the government’s efforts to facilitate the industrial and agricultural sector besides saving money under the head of office expenditure amidst severe financial crunch. The decision would help minimise a widening gap between demand and supply of electricity and overcome expected public wrath because of load shedding.
A source told Pakistan Today on Monday that the Ministry of Finance had moved a summary to the prime minister and the suggestion was expected to be considered at the previous cabinet meeting but the process of ‘political fine-tuning’ stopped the government from placing it on the agenda. He added that the new cabinet would approve the proposal as the issue was not on the agenda of the farewell cabinet meeting tomorrow (Wednesday).
The decision is likely to be in place by the end of March or from the first week of April. He said the government had previously announced a five-day working week on the proposal of the Ministry of Water and Power but now it was the Finance Ministry which made the suggestion.

  1. Weekly two days off is a very good move. The only opposition towards this suggestion is the bussinessmen community, who do not pay their taxes and do not want two weekly holidays because it will reduce their profit.
    Weekly two days off will not only save enery but also brings some savings to the poor public sector employee.

  4. i must day i should be two days off ( saturday is already half day / or holiday in most the companies ) atle ast two days will be better option to store electricity and have less loadsheding

    • Do not dislike the two holidays in a week . As you aware all pakistanis are doing over work and gaining very low income they have no social activitis and additional income in their life. People need some rest to perform their duties. At Last the result will come in bater econimi growth. Two holidays in a week is like a swiminng without breath you cannot swim so far you will see soon that we will become a more strententh Nation.

      Dont move fast as you know it is the habit of devil. Keep your self with nature and move your self with nature to success.

  5. two days holidays is not good for the economy of the country. the government must overcome energy shortages at all costs as it is the duty of the government. in Electricity bills the surcharge is applied in slabs which is not fair. the consumers use electricity according to their use and it is the government's duty to provide sufficient electricity to all consumers. if the government is not able to overcome this problem it shows its negligence or faulty management. i ask a question to government of Pakistan "if energy crisis continues to increase then whether government would SERIOUSLY THINK TO ANNOUNCE WHOLE WEEK HOLIDAYS??????"

    • i AM TOTALY AGREED WITH YOUR COMMENTS. GOVT. IS JUST TRYING TO HIDE ITS WEAKNESSES. INSTEAD OF PAYING DEBTS TO IPPs AND PSO, GOVT. HAS ISSUED NOTICE FOR TWO HOLIDAYS IN A WEEK. GOVT. IS NOT PAYING ITS OVERDUES BUT ALSO IMPLEMENTING DIFFERENT TYPE OF TAXES AND SURCHARGE IN A BILL AND MAKE ADDITIONAL BURDUN TO THE NATIONS….THE PRESENT GOVT. IS TOTALLY FAIL AND CURRUPT….WE SHOULD COME OUT OF OUR HOMES FOR OUR RIGHT AND TO SAVE OUR COUNTRY FROM THIS CURRUPT GOVT.

  7. Instead of working at less than half-efficiency, the people of Pakistan could work harder like people around the world do in 5 days. Having worked at two companies already (local and multi-national), I have realize that most people do not manager their time, nor value it, procrastinate or take twice as much to complete nearly every task, spend about 3-4 hours of the day for Friday prayers (which doesn't take more than 30-45 minutes), and spend their half day saying: Let's relax, it's a half day.

    Like the rest of the world, if we put in 40 hours (or an extra hour each day) in a five day week, we could get so much more done than we currently do in a 6-day week. We don't need a 6-day week to increase business. We need to change the way we conduct business by taking a more organized approach to the way we work in order to compete against the rest of the world.

  10. My respectable shehbaz sharif sahib. plesae do agree to the proposal regarding two holidays a week. banks may be exempted if you think your business will suffer. It is the requirment of time, you know.

      we did it before .. we should do it again .. we did not destroy our economy previously we wudnt do it this time either .. i wud ask the government increasing the money supply isnt destroying our economy ??? the corruption the inflation isnt destroying our economy .. ?? somehow a subsidy on the petrol and 2 days weekend will destroy our economy wherease 200 men touring a foreign country on gvt expense with no purpose at all and a half day which probably no body even bother to work wud save our economy ..

      Do hell with all that .. OUR PM DECLARED A HALF DAY ON PAK VS INDIA SEMIS .. Where was the economy bullshit then ??

  11. 2 weekly holidays is a great concept. All over the world there is a 5 working days week. But unfortunately, Shahbaz Shareef keeps on opposing it because his own business will suffer.. This will give bankers some respite as every one knows how hectic banker's job is. Please vote for the 2 weekly offs…

    • Indeed. 02 days off is inevitable. Life is like hell with 06 working days. We are already working 9 to 9 (round the clock). If Govt. Offices are not working properly tu is main humara kya kasur hai. All over the world 02 days off hotain hain. Hum nay jo taraqi 06 din kam kur kai hasil key hai who aap sub kay samnay hai …….
      02 days off say na sirf electricity key bachat ho ghee bulkay fuel consumption bhi kum ho ghee. Please consider 02 days off.

  15. There should be two weekly holidays permanently. LIFE IS HELL WITH 6 WORKING DAYS IN A WEEK. We can not enjoy our lives and can not give enough time to our families. If the Government do not consider two days holidays in a week, then morally the government should have pass the rule that all the offices must close at 3.00 pm in any case. In most offices, the people work beyond the working hours and return home very late. One should must have in mind that a large number of government employees work away from their homes and they go to meet their beloved after 1 or 2 months. So the government must think for the people not for the businessmen society who do not pay their taxes honestly. The country will have no financial crisis if the traders/businessmen pay their taxes honestly.

  17. Two Weekly holidays are for Public Sector Only. It is strange that the Business Community is showing its reservations over it. This practice is followed in the west as well. Infact, all business close down at 6pm/7pm in Europe.

    The Government is not asking the Private Businesses to be closed for 2 days in a week, then why an issue is being created?

    Most Importantly , if the working hours in a week remain the same, then there is no excuse for not having 2 weekly holidays. We talk of international Best Practices, then why we cant follow this one?

  18. Nations have developed (many European countries, North America, Japan etc.) with five days working regime, and many are showing marvelous growth in the same regime ( Malaysia, Korea,China). It means it is not 5 or 6 day week which makes the difference.

    5 days a week is a human option and should be implemented not as a transition arrangement, but as a permanent arrangement to close this chapter.

    PML-N will not support any decision taken by Federal Government, so there hue and cry should be taken in a different perspective.

  27. For bankers, it would be a flash of hope and really the bankers deserve two weekly offs in a week as they go to there banks on time while left to there homes in late hours. Bankers has no social life. We strongly vote for two weekly offs on permanent basis.

    The credit should go to PPPP, if it has been implemented on permanent basis.

  43. It is not a viable decision, govt. offices consume less energy then private sector. If govt. wants to save energy two day must be off for all business sector like Sunday.

  46. I personally think that Govt is in condition lost every kind of senses and think what should to do? Did you guys condered that in Pakistan, 62% peoples are working with daily wages what they will do. I dont point out expect Karachi, in one day shutdowns the productions and trading only impatc billions of rupees and in 8hrs energy consunptiom u can save 25% energy while tradting and production sectors impact is 75%. Although we Pakistani are happy get another chance to eat, drink and deballance the population ratio. Come on enjoy

  48. almost every country in the world has 5 working days they even have a concept of long weekends once in a while. what i fail to understand is how come they r the Developed nations and us still Developing? come'on folks the workin class needs sometime for family n frnds as well. shortage or no shortage 2 days off shud be implemented. it would only help in improvement in the quality of work.

  54. weekly 2 days holidays boht acha suggestion he.mgr jo log officer/ officials office main kam krate hain unko be waqt ka paband banaya jay ko wo waqt pe office ayen. aur waqt pe office se chutti karen.mge yahan officer 11,12,1 baje aty hain of raat 10.11.12 baje tak office main baithe rahte hain.aur apne neechy k amla ko tang karte hain.unko be hadayat ki jay ko wo be office time k baad office main no rahen.time pe ayen aur time pe chutti karen.

  55. 02 days of is a very good move. we are facing all type of energy problems i.e. Electricity, and Fuel (i.e. CNG & Patrol) due to 02 days holidays we can save extra and constantly consumption of energy. so i think weekly 02 days off is the best option and solution for saving the energy.
