ISLAMABAD – The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) cannot legally declare anyone an absconder, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, a close aid of former president Pervez Musharraf, said on Monday.
“Under the criminal procedure code (CRPC Pakistan), only the court of law can declare a person an absconder,” he said, adding that the FIA had just put Musharraf’s name on the list of people to be interrogated in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case. Calling the entire process “a political drama”, Saif said the FIA had neither contacted nor sent any questionnaire to Musharraf in the Benazir murder case.
“The whole nation knows who killed Benazir Bhutto. The killers of Benazir are those who got political benefits from her death,” he alleged without naming anyone. He said the PPP workers were also pointing fingers at the real culprits behind her assassination. He said President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani had themselves declared Baitullah Mehsud as Benazir’s assassin.
“Now the PPP central leadership is playing politics on the name of the slain Bhutto,” he added. He rebutted FIA’s charges that Musharraf was in constant contact with former CPO Saud Aziz and SP Khurram Shahzad.
