LAHORE – Vegetable and fruit prices remained stable at Sunday bazaars owing to increased supply but customers were seen complaining about quality of products. People complained that they were forced to buy low quality vegetables and fruits at higher prices.
“The quality of vegetables always remains a problem at Sunday bazaars but every time the administration is least bothered about it,” said customer Javed Ahmed. Another customer Mehmood Ali said that although prices were stable but quality remained low. “The town municipal officers (TMO are very much aware of quality of vegetables and fruits but are least bothered and do not take action,” Ali lamented.
Sugar continued to elude customers at the bazaars while a TMO said that sugar prices have decreased in the local market and people are less interested in buying the commodity from Sunday bazaars. “Sugar is available for Rs 65 per kilogramme in the open marker while we are getting it for Rs 68 due to which we are being advised not to erect sugar stalls,” said a TMO adding that sugar demand has decreased over the last week. Vendors said that they purchase products from the open market and have nothing to do with low quality fruits or vegetables.
Traders said that they only keep a margin of Rs 5 to 8 per kilogramme on every item. “If we buy onions for Rs 20 per kilogramme from the open market, we sell it for Rs 25 at Sunday bazaars. It is not our fault that products are expensive or low in quality,” said vendor Mehboob Akhtar.
