Will they or won’t they?

REGIONAL PRESS – Once again reports are circulating that the incumbent regime will end in a day or two. This is not the first time that the rumour mills in Pakistan have churned out such stories and reports like these have been surfacing from time to time. In response to such fears, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has categorically stated that his government was elected by the people’s vote and will complete its term.

Other senior government officials have also underscored the view expressed by the Prime Minister that the government will complete its term but it remains to be seen whether this government will indeed be able to complete its term amidst all the prevalent turmoil despite the convictions of the PM and his ministers. The people are fed up of the current rulers due to the unprecedented price hike, drastic increase in unemployment and terrorism that were never witnessed in the past governments.

The present regime is undoubtedly a democratically elected one and it will be a hard task to oust it easily (even though talks of a revolution are a dime a dozen) but the previous governments of Mian Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto were also elected by the masses but they were eventually dissolved due to their own wrong policies, as per the popular will of the people.

The incumbent rulers too are preparing the ground for such an eventuality and our providing the people with reasons for disaffection with their own government. If the rulers do not change their policies and at least make a sincere effort on the part of the government to bring change, then there would be no reason for them to stay in power and God forbid, they could push the country into a dictatorship again.
