ISLAMABAD – The brutal torture meted out to Syed Kabir Wasti, senior vice-president of Pakistan Muslim League (PML)-Likeminded, on Saturday attracted criticism from politicians across the political divide. Condemning the incident, they demanded the government to hold a judicial inquiry for exposing the culprits.
Ijazul Haq, the head of his own faction of the PML, Ijazul Haq said, “It is regrettable that unknown persons in an official vehicle thrashed a senior politician,” adding if such incidents could produce anarchy in the country. Awami Muslim League President Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said the government should investigate the matter in order to bring to book the culprits who thrashed Kabir Wasti.
Senator Raja Zafarul Haq of PML-N said he was unaware of the details; therefore, he was not in a position to pass any comment. “After reading the newspapers, I tried to contact him but he was not available on the phone,” Haq added. Chairman PPP-Sherpao Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao said every body had his own point of view and such efforts were against the spirit of democracy.
Senior Vice-President PML-Likeminded Lala Nisar Ahmad Khan visited injured Wasti and enquired about his health. Speaking on the occasion, Nisar said physical torture could not suppress the voice of truth and the incident had disclosed the nefarious designs of the perpetrators, adding that it was about time for the government’s agents to mend their ways or get ready to face the wrath of the masses.
An FIR had been registered with Shahzad Town Police Station under sections 341,147,150 and 427 of Pakistan Penal Code (PCC) against five unknown people who thrashed Wasti, said Haider, the investigation officer. “We have started investigation and would soon arrest the culprits involved,” he said. Quoting Wasti, the officer said he had no enmity with anyone.
