WORLD CANCER DAY OBSERVED: A seminar to mark the World Cancer Day was held at Women College Daska. Daska Civil Hospital’s specialist, Farah Kamran, speaking on the occasion, said the researchers of the World Health Organisation (WHO) had estimated that 84 million people across the world would die of cancer by 2015. She said a majority of these individuals would not receive treatment and many might not be formally diagnosed.
In some countries like India and China, cancer was not considered as a serious health threat, she said, adding an increase in the use of tobacco and exposure to other carcinogens such as asbestos were reasons for the worldwide increase in new cancer cases. According to the WHO figures, every seventh person in the world is dying of cancer every year while in 2005, eight million people died of cancer out of 58 million deaths worldwide.
The figures further revealed that 40 percent of cancer deaths could be prevented.
