ISLAMABAD – The National Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed the Privatisation Commission (Amendment) Bill 2009, while another bill to amend the Rules of Procedure and Business was referred to the committee concerned.
NA Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi expressed displeasure over the absence of Law Minister Babar Awan, due to which most of the business on the private members’ day could not be adopted. PML-Q’s Dr Attiya Inayatullah said it was the fifth consecutive private members’ day with the parliamentary affairs’ minister not attending House proceedings.
She said if Awan was busy with party affairs, any other member should be made the minister for parliamentary affairs, as his absence was badly affecting the legislation process. Both amendment bills were moved by female MNAs, one each by the PML-N and PML-Q. The bill was tabled by PML-Q MNA Dr Donya Aziz, while Anushe Rehman of the PML-N moved the amendment in rules of procedures for the National Assembly.
Moving the bill, Donya said the bill pertained to increase in the number of the members of the privatisation commission from 16 to 20, which would help bring more transparency and accountability in the privatisation process.
