LAHORE – The Lahore Police has finally requested the US Consulate’s deputy chief of protocol in writing to hand over the staffers involved in running over a youth in Lahore and the vehicle which was used in the incident.
A senior police officer, said on condition of anonymity, that the investigation team probing the incident had formally written a letter to the Protocol Deputy Chief of the US Consulate in Lahore for immediate custody of the officials who had run over Ubaidur Rehman in violation of traffic rules. The police have also demanded the handing over of the SUV bearing registration LZN-6970 and its details to further probe into the matter.
Police sources said that although Raymond Davis was trying to conceal his suspicious movement, the Americans in the backup vehicle and Davis’ belongings, including his cell phone and car tracker, would help them solve the mystery in which two Pakistani youth were shot dead by Davis and another run over by a US Consulate vehicle which had come to rescue Davis.
The official said that according to his information, Davis was on a visit visa and could not avail diplomatic immunity. Meanwhile, Lytton Road police have sent the Glock pistol and its 60 bullets recovered from Davis and two pistols recovered from the two deceased youths to the Forensic Laboratory for examination. The police investigation team has also sent the tracker of Davis’ car to the tracking company to obtain vital data.
Another investigator, wishing not to be named, said the two deceased youths had a criminal background, as around five FIRs had been traced against them in various police stations of the city. With the police’s claim that the boys were robbers, officials seem all set to release Davis.
Well-placed sources in intelligence agencies told Pakistan Today that the Lahore Police had traced four to five cases against Faizan Haider in various police stations, adding that Faizan, also known as Sunny, used to shift houses after every four to five months.
However heirs of both Faizan and Faheem, the other youth, reject the allegations being made against the two youths, saying the police were trying to get a clean chit for Davis.
