ISLAMABAD – Senate Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production Chairman Javed Ashraf Qazi on Saturday said that the parliamentary oversight ensured transparency and promoted good governance, besides enabling the government to devise popular policies to achieve the goal of development and social emancipation of the common man.
He was addressing a group of 45 foreign services attaches and advisers during their visit to the Parliament House. Qazi said the role of parliament was of utmost importance in achieving consensus on issues of immense public significance. He briefed the group about working and performance of the Senate and the role played by it in the policy formulation.
He also informed the guests about the composition and electoral process of the Upper House. He said provinces had been given equal representation in the Senate, which helped evolve harmony and also helpful in the balanced growth of the country. He also dilated upon the powers and functions of the Senate and its committees and said that the committee system in the Senate was vibrant and kept a constant check on the working of the ministries and departments.
He also apprised the delegation about the working of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production, saying the committee played an active role in scrutinising defence spending and taking up other important issues related to the country’s defence. Qazi said floods had exacerbated economic challenges of the country, which directly affected all segments of the economy, including defence.
