KARACHI – The Turkish authorities have assured Pakistan of an impartial enquiry before determining its verdict on the imposition anti-dumping duty on Pakistan’s textile exports. It has also been clarified that Ankara is still in a probing phase and that the final decision might take as long as eight to nine months.
The pledge was made when a Pakistani business delegation, led by Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh on Investment Muhammad Zubair Motiwala met MNA and Chairman Turk-Pakistan Inter-Parliamentary Group Burhan Kayaturk, and Secretary for Foreign Trade Cemalettin Damalci,.
Other delegates included Secretary Investment Mohammad Younus Dagha and prominent businessmen such as Khalid Feroze, Ebrahim Qasim, Abdullah Ellahi and Maqbool Ellahi. An official handout released on Friday indicated that the delegation raised the issue of the proposed anti-dumping duty to be imposed on textile fabrics imported from six countries including Pakistan.
The Pakistani delegation underlined to the Turkish authorities that Pakistan fabrics could not justifiably be subjected to such duties. They cited the fact that Pakistani exporters were not involved in dumping of these products and stressed that such measures would ultimately hurt Turkish value-addition industry which is dependant on Pakistani imports.
They also pointed out that it would increase unemployment in Pakistani economy which is already under immense economic stress after the massive summer floods. It was also claimed that this measure would only benefit large developed economies at the cost of the Pakistani economy with such countries easily able to protect their industries against anti-dumping measures.
