ISLAMABAD – Police Deputy Inspector General Major (r) Mubasharullah told the Supreme Court on Friday that Islamabad’s former IG Kalim Imam had phoned him and asked to accept the affidavits being filed on behalf of Ali Riaz, Bahria Town’s chief executive and one of the accused in illegal drag race case in which an accident claimed five lives.
A four-member bench, composed of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday, was hearing a suo motu case about five people’s killing in an accident occurred in illegal drag race at Bahria Town, Rawalpindi.
The court asked the DIG to submit his written statement to the court and directed the registrar to issue notice to Kalim Imam to explain why he tried to influence the investigating officer. The court directed the Interior and Foreign Affairs secretaries and the Federal Investigation Agency director to ensure Atif Sheikh’s extradition, an accused in the case who fled the country.
Punjab Advocate General Khawaja Haris Ahmad told the court that police tried to get Atif Shaikh’s red warrants but the authorities concerned were delaying the matter. He requested the court to direct the authorities concerned to expedite efforts for Atif Sheikh’s repatriation.
