LHC rejects plea against construction of BB’s monument

LAHORE – The Lahore High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition, challenging the construction of Benazir Bhutto’s monument at Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi, by spending money from the national exchequer.
The division bench headed by Chief justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry dismissed the petition and held that it was not the job of the court, but of the government or parliament to determine who was or was not a national hero or whose monument should be or should not be built from the national kitty.
The court said, “We cannot dictate the government on such matters.” On January 19, the court, after concluding proceedings, reserved the judgment on the petition and announced it on Wednesday.
Feroz Shah Gilani, a local lawyer, had filed the petition against the construction of monument of Miss Bhutto at Liaquat Bagh, alleging that it was being built with a cost of Rs 1 billion from the national exchequer.
