GENEVA – Pakistan has warned that growing international support for India’s nuclear programme will force Islamabad to bolster its deterrence, which will destabilise the region, AFP reported.
In the opening session of the 2011 Conference on Disarmament, Pakistan’s Ambassador Zamir Akram sharply criticised reported moves to bring India into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and other bodies that allow trade in nuclear materials, including for weapons.
“These measures will undermine the international non-proliferation regime and will destabilise security in South Asia,” Akram said, adding that “Pakistan will be forced to take measures to ensure the credibility of its deterrence.”
Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao categorically stated on Tuesday that no headway was expected in the Indo-Pak foreign secretaries’ meeting, according to Online. Talking to Pakistani reporters in New Delhi, she said India sought positive and result-oriented talks and not another photo session.
