LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday approved establishment of the Punjab Food Authority. He was chairing a meeting to review proposals regarding the authority.
The CM said that the decision to establish the Punjab Food Authority has been taken, as provision of unadulterated and quality essential items to people is of vital importance. He said that the authority would be completely autonomous on pattern of the Punjab Health Commission.
Shahbaz directed officials to present draft of the law for the Punjab Food Authority after making necessary amendments. He said that food-testing laboratories be set-up under the authority and views of the people be sought with regard to setting-up of the authority.
Earlier, Punjab Food Secretary Irfan Elahi said that the CM had constituted a committee headed by the Punjab chief secretary regarding establishment of the authority, which has formulated its recommendations after consultation with stakeholders. He said that different departments are working for provision of pure and quality essential items to people but the desired results are not being achieved due to lack of coordination.
Irfan said that establishment of the authority would result in an affective system of monitoring with regard to quality essential items, which will provide relief to people. Participants of the meeting also gave their proposals regarding the authority.
