LAHORE – Punjab Education and law ministers disregarded the dance at Government College University in the provincial assembly despite attention sought by a lawmaker from treasury benches.
Neither did the ministers concerned nor the Speaker give importance to the incident of using GCU, one of the most respected and widely-acclaimed institutions of the country, for a dance by stage dancer, Deedar at the Bonfire Night held at the varsity on the last Wednesday last.
During the house in session, on a point of order the treasury member Nighat Nasir Sheikh drew the attention of the house over the dance program at Government College where the stage actress Deedar performed. She said that besides students, teachers were also present during the performance regarding which students had registered protest.
She said the house should take notice of such dance programs at educational institutions. It was interesting to note the issue was not attended to by both Law and Education ministers and even the chair remained silent, with house members also remaining unconcerned too.
The issue was discussed widely in the media but the Education department and Punjab Government has kept mum over the issue and expressed no response to an attempt to damage the educational norms in the province. According to details, stage dancer Deedar performed at GCU to recent hit songs “Munni Badnaam Hui” and “Sheila Ki Jiwani”. Media reports suggested the performance did not go down well with some varsity students. Media reports also claimed female students were seen leaving the venue when Deedar started performing.
