Chan captures fourth Canadian title

VICTORIA – Patrick Chan nailed two quad jumps Sunday as he was crowned Canadian figure skating champion for the fourth-straight year after easily winning the men’s free skate event. Chan, who won a silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games in February, delivered on his promise to do a pair of quadruple jumps in Sunday’s long programme skate at Memorial Centre arena. The 20-year-old Chan finished with a overall score of 285.85 points, more than 56 points ahead of runner-up Shawn Sawyer.
Joey Russell (204.02) was third while Kevin Reynolds (191.85) was fourth. Elladj Balde rounded out the top five with 190.16 points. Vanessa Crone and Paul Poirier won the ice dance title Sunday by capturing the free dance routine. Crone and Poirier finished with 164.21 points, 1.03 ahead of Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje. Alexandra Paul and Mitchell Islam were third overall on 153.90 points. Crone and Poirier, who also won the short dance programme, captured the free dance Sunday with 98.41 points, .87 ahead of Weaver and Poje with Paul and Islam third on 92.33.
