Cabinet wants an extradition treaty with Ukraine

ISLAMABAD – The Cabinet, which is scheduled to meet on Wednesday (January 26), will approve negotiations for agreement on an extradition treaty between Pakistan and Ukraine, Pakistan Today has learnt reliably.
After the signing of this treaty, each country’s prisoners will be returned to their country of origin. Pakistan has been working on signing extradition treaties with different countries all over the world. According to data recently provided to the National Assembly, more than 5,000 Pakistanis are languishing in jails of US, UK, UAE, Saudi Arabia, China and other Arab and European countries on account of various crimes.
Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed an Extradition Treaty in 2004, which provided for repatriation of people involved in transnational crimes which was ratified by UAE cabinet in December 2010. So far, Pakistan has failed to sign extradition treaties with major countries including USA, UK, Saudi Arabia and other European countries.
The Federal Cabinet will also ratify United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It is to be mentioned here that Pakistan signed the said convention on September, 25 2008 but is not the signatory of the protocol. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is an international human rights instrument of the United Nations intended to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
Parties to the Convention are required to promote, protect, and ensure the full enjoyment of human rights by people with disabilities and ensure that they enjoy full equality under the law. The text was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 13 December 2006 and opened for signature on 30 March 2007.
There are eight guiding principles that underlie the Convention: Respect for inherent dignity, individual autonomy including the freedom to make one’s own choices and independence of persons; non-discrimination; full and effective participation and inclusion in society; respect for difference and acceptance of persons with disabilities as part of human diversity and humanity; equality of opportunity; accessibility; equality between men and women and respect for the evolving capacities of children with disabilities and respect for the right of children with disabilities to preserve their identities
The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is a side-agreement to the Convention which allows its parties to recognize the competence of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to consider complaints from individuals.
Initiation of negotiations to conclude an agreement between Pakistan and Senegal for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes in income is also part of Federal Cabinet meeting’s agenda.
