ISLAMABAD – The Rangers have been empowered to arrest miscreants in Karachi on a request by the Sindh government, Information Minster Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Saturday. “The Rangers have been tasked with taking action against miscreants in Karachi on a request by the Sindh government.
The whole country is worried over the worsening law and order situation in Karachi and the government is taking measures to restore peace there,” Kaira said while talking to reporters after an in-camera meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting. He denied that an operation was underway or curfew had been imposed in any area of Karachi in recent days.
Kaira said the government wanted to amend the Freedom of Information Ordinance 2002 and consultations with provinces in this regard were almost complete. “The government is likely present the freedom of information bill for amendments in the National Assembly in February. The government has completed the consultation process with three provinces and talks with Punjab are underway, which hopefully will be completed within the next two days,” the minister said.
To a question on the resignation of Nabeel Gabol, Kaira said it was an internal matter of the Pakistan People’s Party and the prime minister had removed Gabol’s reservations.
Earlier, the standing committee discussed amendments in the Information Ordinance 2002, saying it would be better if the government’s proposed amendments to the ordinance and the Freedom Information Bill 2009, submitted by Donya Aziz, was combined. Donya Aziz agreed to the suggestion.
