ISLAMABAD – The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has still not hired a contactor for the development of sector I-15 allotted in 2006 to meet the housing needs of low-income groups working in the federal capital.
According to a CDA official, there are 13,500 housing units in the allotted sector having 5,500 plots each measuring 5-7 marlas and 8,000 flats each to be built on 1,300 square feet area. He said the civic body allotted these housing units under a quota system giving 54 percent to general public, 20 percent to natives, 10 percent to non-commissioned officers (NCOs) of the Army, 10 percent to basic pay scale (BPS) (1-15) federal government employees, five percent to CDA employees, and one percent to the working journalists in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
He added that owing to delay in the development of I-15 sector, over 2,000 allottees had applied for refund of their money and the CDA had so far paid back the amount of 1,000 applicants. He said Islamabad was currently facing a shortage of 40,000 housing units that would further inflate real estate rates adding to the miseries of the low-income groups having maximum annual income of Rs 150,000.
