The government is launching a major shake up in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) by replacing senior official.
The recent example of corruption in the FBR is the scam of 10,000 to 15,000 containers of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) which went missing from Karachi and Qasim port during the last two years. This has caused a loss of Rs 19 billion to Rs 37 billion to the national exchequer.
It is unfortunate that the National Logistic Cell (NLC) chairman and chairman FBR are called by the Supreme Court to explain the causes of this scam. NLCs senior officers are already charged for the illegal investments of Rs 4 billion bank loans in the stock exchange which has suffered losses. The NLC scam report is being submitted to the COAS as the NLC is managed by the army.
It is time to reform the FBR and split it into different autonomous bodies for customs, direct income and sale taxes.
